Temple University Women's Soccer

"committing to excellence is not an act, it's an attitude and then some..."

That's All Folks!!

Finals are wrapping up. The freshmen are packing up the dorms after their first year here at Temple and the upperclassmen/their parents are relieved that they do not have to move all of their furniture...for now!  As everyone parts for our three month break we reflect on what this past year has brought.  Not only has the Temple Soccer Family grown in size, but it has grown through experiences.  Getting together to watch our '09-'10 year end video the other day was just another reminder of everything we have accomplished.

It really is only a short time until we are back again building our family once more.  As Sha and Sam wrote:

"...Even though we are in a lot of pain
We keep coming back because we love this game
More than the game we love each other
Like you would love a sister or brother..."

The most important thing that we have achieved over the course of the year is unity.

"Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success." - Henry Ford

I believe next year we will be a force to be reckoned with.  I hope everyone enjoys each and every minute of their summer whether it be in the States or Europe :)  So, that's all folks and I look forward to playing with you all again next fall!

We Make a Good Team!

The girls hard at work the other weekend preparing snack bags for after the Broad Street Run...

Make note that each apple had to be hand wiped before we could put them in the bag!! (That was definitely the hardest position in our assembly line haha)

Broad Street Run

Broad_st_run_sm

Saturday the team volunteered at Murphy Recreation Center to help prepare nourishment packages for the Broad Street Run.  We worked in an assembly line style making what seemed to be about 2,000 goodie bags!  Although we were tired of seeing those particular items by the end of the afternoon... I know I greatly appreciated receiving one after the race!  When we had finished preparing our bag quota, we were driven to the Lincoln Financial Field where we could pick up our running bibs at the Broad Street Run Expo.  Once we collected our bibs we then volunteered to help hand out bibs to the other 30,000 runners.

We all met up at the subway Sunday morning to get to the starting point.  I have never seen the subway so crowded!  Personal space?? Forget about it!  A few of us made it down to where BOMF was meeting up to stretch and give updates on how some individuals are progressing.  And about 20 minutes after the actual start, we began running.  Despite hot weather conditions we all survived the 10 mile run!  Personally, this was an amazing experience.  It was truly wonderful being apart of something bigger than just a race.  The Broad Street Run was a charity for the American Cancer Society.  Runners, volunteers and the crowd/supporters composed the thousands of people who came out to support the cause.

Cherry and White Day

This past Saturday (4/17) was Temple's Annual Cherry and White Day.  Despite the somewhat chilly weather, we had an excellent turn out!  To start off our day we hosted a Lose the Shoes 3v3 tournament www.grassrootsoccer.org/losetheshoes. This year we have been supportive of Ethan Zohn's battle through his chemotherapy for a rare form of Hodgkin's disease; in addition, we have reached out to support his organization.  To give you some quick background information... Ethan is a co-founder of Grassroot Soccer, a soccer based HIV prevention program www.grassrootsoccer.org.  Because soccer is a global language, Grassroots' goal is to use it to educate the youth in Africa about the dangers of HIV-AIDS.  The tournament we hosted is a small way for us and our community to contribute towards the cause.

After our tournament ended, we participated in the annual alumni game and closed up the day with a raffle and a delicious barbecue.  We would like to thank all of the alumni for their support! ...and we look forward to next year :)

TUWS Meets the Provost at a Special Banquet

Recently, TUWS was invited and attended a banquet held by Lisa Staniano-Coico, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Peter Jones the Senior Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies.  The banquet was for the women's and men's soccer team, the field hockey team, and the volleyball team.  The banquet was to thank us and the other teams for all the hard work we put in academically and athletically.  There were appetizers and plenty of mingling which allowed us to meet the Provost and talk with our fellow student athletes in a relaxed setting that was very enjoyable.  We were honored to be recognized for all our hard work and we had a great time at the banquet.

Out With Adidas and In With Under Armour

In case you haven't heard, Temple's contract with Adidas is up at the end of the year, July 1, 2010.  As a result, we have signed a new contract with Under Armour! We are all super excited about the switch and change from Adidas to Under Armour.  Obviously we are all familiar with the company Under Armour but in case you are not heres a little background information.  Under Armour was founded by Kevin Plank who played football for the Terps at University of Maryland.  Most people know Under Armour for their form fitting shirts and gear, which is how the company originally got started.  Plank was sick and tired of changing out of his sweat-soaked t-shrits that he wore under his jersey, so he made a t-shirt using moisture wick fabric and soon founded the company in 1996.  Under Armour is known for its quality of clothing and we cannot wait to where our new Under Armour jersey's for the 2010 fall season.

Men's Basketball Owl Day

On Wednesday February 24th, the nationally ranked Temple Owls Men's basketball team took on the Flyers of the University of Dayton in a pivotal Atlantic 10 match-up.  There were tons of fans and since it was their Owl Day, all of the Temple Athletic Teams were there to cheer on their home team.  The Owls prevailed to take the very important win, 49-41.

This was also a pretty important night because Temple Athletic Teams were honored at halftime for team cumulative GPA's over a 3.0.  The Temple Women's Soccer team was one of the teams honored!  We all worked very hard this past semester, so getting honored for such a big accomplishment felt pretty good!  The ceremony was set up this year pretty similar to the Olympic games.  All of the teams lined up behind each other and all got a chance to walk around the basketball court.  We got to shake hands with Bill Bradshaw, our athletic director, and than walked around the court while waving to the fans.  We all had fun doing it and were very proud of ourselves.  Our goal for this semester is to stay above a 3.0 again!

Snow!!!

Tuws_snow_day

This week could possibly be the best week ever. It started off with practice Monday being a rugby match! We got so much snow on Saturday that by Monday it was still like a foot tall and soft! Liz Allen taught us how to play rugby and it turned out to be a blast! I have realized that rugby just consists of people tackling other people. It was so much fun! We have gotten so much snow this week. Today is Wednesday and not only did practice get canceled but our classes did too! That is how much snow we are getting! It is still pouring down too! I am looking out the window right now and it looks like a blizzard. All in all the snow here in Philly has been unbelievable! It definitely is a winter wonderland!

Temple Women's Gymnastics Owl Day!

Every event made the audience flip with excitement! The Women's Gymnastics's Liberty Classic (held this past Sunday) featured colleges all over the area including West Chester, Ursinus, Wilson, and Ithaca. Temple stayed focused and took on their competition with style and came out in FIRST PLACE in the all-around competition! Temple Owls Katie Canning and Natasha Crawford jumped and leaped their way to scores where Canning scored a career high of 38.725 and Crawford following closely with a score of 38.050. We watched our fellow owls come out with a great victory and TUWS could not be happier to watch them succeed so graciously!
